Decoding Clinical Judgment in Case Studies

Learn how to pull relevant data from nurses' notes and lab results to make safe clinical decisions in NGN case studies.
Case studies in the NGN are designed to mimic a real shift. You aren't just answering a question; you are managing a patient.
#1. Read the Scenario First
Get a sense of the patient's age, chief complaint, and setting (e.g., ER vs. Home Health). This sets the context for all your decisions.
#2. Identify Relevant Cues
Not every piece of data in a nurse's note is important. Look for things that are "not right"—abnormal labs, worsening vital signs, or new complaints.
#3. Prioritize Your Actions
If the patient is in respiratory distress, checking their blood pressure is less important than elevating the head of the bed or providing oxygen. Always follow ABCs (Airway, Breathing, Circulation).
# 4. Evaluate the Response
After you take an action, what happened? Did the patient improve? The NGN tests if you can recognize when an intervention worked or when you need to change course.
